NEW CAR SALES – The DOWNTURN in the market in 2009 The NEW car market continued to remain subdued in April! The effects of the 'credit crunch', financial uncertainty, gloom in the job market and with many manufacturers going on to short time working, or closing temporarily, and shedding jobs in many instances... all of these mean that the beleaguered car industry is continuing to experience a decline in new car sales activity not seen since the 1980's. Many people are continuing to put off any decision to purchase a new car, not just because of the uncertainty in the marketplace today, but more often than not because they just cannot get the loan they need. Banks just aren't lending! ** May 2009 - Latest News ** The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has welcomed government’s introduction of a scrappage incentive scheme to kick-start demand in the car and van market. The scheme, due to start in May 2009, will see government offer a £1,000 incentive to be matched by participating vehicle manufacturers when scrapping a taxed, insured and MOT’d car or van over ten years old which they have owned for at least one year. For further information, go to the SMMT web site. However, not everyone is in favour of such a scheme. Indeed the boss of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), David Smith, has questioned the scrappage scheme saying that it will "... have a minimal impact and merely distort a fundamentally struggling market.....". JLR, the largest employer in UK car manufacturing, has always doubted the boost the £600m scheme will deliver to its own premium cars, but David Smith says the terms proposed by the Chancellor mean the effect on standard and small car sales will also be limited. Mr Smith has also warned that trends in European car sales, despite scrappage schemes, remained downwards. "I still think Europe is going down," he said. "Strip away the distortion of the scrappage schemes, the underlying trend is downwards in Europe. Most of the increase in sales is in the small segment and at some stage there will be a negative effect on those segments when the scrappage incentives come off." The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have also released their latest new car sales figures for April 2009. These show the following... > New car registrations fell 24% in April to 133,475 units, down from 451,642 in March 2008 > The market in first four months of 2009 has fallen by 245,184 units, or 28.5% > That is the 11th consecutive monthly decline in new car sales > Diesel sales showed a slight dip in April, but demand for small cars continues to grow “Today records the eleventh successive fall in new car registrations yet the UK motor industry continues to demonstrate its strength and resilience throughout,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive. “Despite the tough conditions, industry is hopeful that its prospects will improve in the coming months and the steps it has taken will provide the basis for a sustained recovery once growth returns. USED CAR SALES – The UPTURN in the market in 2009 Whilst the new car market remains extremely volatile, the used car market is becoming more and more buoyant as people put off buying a new car (more often because they cannot get a loan to finance their purchase) and instead decide to trade up to a (newer) used car, or trade down to a cheaper, more fuel efficient car. ** May 2009 - Latest News ** Figures recently released have shown that the used car market is continuing to grow rapidly. In the last three months, used car sales for vehicles over 3 years old have increased by over 85%. Yes, you did read that correctly! But in case you missed it, I'll repeat it...
"Used car sales for vehicles over 3 years old have risen by over 85%!" So, demand in the used car market continues to grow, particularly with regard to diesels and smaller cars. A spokesman for Glass's Guide said... "The recession continues to have an impact on the rates of used car depreciation, with the values of smaller fuel-efficient cars and particularly diesels remaining strong." This is excellent news for a broker, who's business revolves around the sourcing of good used cars and working with both private sellers and dealers in the trade to help 'broker' the best deals. So the market for used cars continues unabated and many dealers have found that stock levels have not matched the 'run rate' on retail demand, and have to continually look for new stock. Particularly good-quality used cars. The dealers can't get enough of them, because they're their key to profitability. You only need to check out the "cars wanted" sections for quality cars in any newspaper. There are pages and pages and pages of them. By now, you've taken in a lot of information about this fantastic opportunity, and it's only natural you'll have a few questions you want answering. With this is mind, here's a list of some of the most common questions people have recently asked me... "What about the 'credit crunch'? Isn't this business being affected by the economic downturn?" The ‘credit crunch’ has had an impact, and I would be lying if I said it hadn’t. But people still need to sell their cars (in some cases even more urgently now), and dealers are still buying cars. New car sales are down, but used car sales are up. So in some respects, the 'credit crunch' can actually benefit this business. It’s about being cuter with the people you’re dealing with and recognising those situations where a deal can always be made. With certain market sectors continuing to experience significant business downturns, the car market has certainly encountered its own problems, but not across the board! For example, whilst sales of larger 'gas guzzling' 4x4's have certainly suffered, as have those with larger CO2 emissions, (which will start to incur a higher road licence tax band in 2009 and beyond), other sectors of the car market (particularly at the lower/cheaper end) are still doing relatively well. So as with all businesses, it's a question of seeing what's moving and what's not, and focusing your own business accordingly. It's about keeping your 'finger on the pulse', knowing who's buying and who's not, and seeking out those great deals which are always going to be out there. The good thing of course is that once the market bottoms out, there is only one way it can go, and that’s upwards. So it’s a question of whether you’re the ‘glass is half empty’ type of person, or whether the ‘glass is half full’. See what's actually happening in the car market... “What if I don't have much money? Won't I need a lot to get started?” No! Because you're not actually buying anything! You're not buying any cars. You're only identifying and sourcing cars (from people who are trying to sell them), identifying potential buyers, agreeing the deal and acting as the broker or 'middleman' in the transaction. So there's absolutely no financial risk to you at all! What could be better than that? Contrary to popular belief, you only need to have a small amount of money to get up and running in the car broking business.
